A woman in her 70s who went missing in Newhey has been found after hundreds of residents joined Greater Manchester Police in an extraordinary community search.
An elderly woman who went missing in Newhey has been found following an extraordinary community effort involving hundreds of local residents.
Christine, who is in her 70s, was reported missing earlier in the evening, prompting an urgent response from Greater Manchester Police and a huge mobilisation across Newhey and the surrounding area.
As concern grew, residents left their homes to help officers search on the ground. People walked streets, paths and open spaces, checked nearby areas and shared information rapidly across community groups in an effort to bring Christine home.
The response was remarkable. Hundreds of people are understood to have assisted either directly with searches or by sharing appeals and helping to coordinate information alongside GMP.
At around 11pm, local woman Charlotte Rigby found Christine. In a touching detail after hours of worry, Christine was found clutching a bunch of flowers.
News that she had been located was met with enormous relief across the community, bringing a frightening evening to the best possible conclusion.
Tonight demonstrated Newhey and the wider Rochdale borough at its very best. Residents did not simply share a post and hope for good news. They put on their shoes, went outside and actively helped search for someone who needed them.
Credit must also go to Greater Manchester Police and everyone who supported the search, but special recognition is due to the countless members of the public who gave their time and refused to give up.
The borough should be very proud tonight. This was community spirit in its purest form, and the outcome is the great news everyone had been hoping for.
