Residents and business owners along Milkstone Road are continuing to raise concerns about dangerous driving, excessive speeding and alleged late-night street racing, with many calling for stronger enforcement before someone is seriously injured.

Milkstone Road is one of Rochdale's busiest routes, carrying thousands of vehicles each day while also serving local shops, schools, places of worship and residential streets. For many residents, the road should be a safe route for families, pedestrians and cyclists. However, some say that during evenings and late at night, it can become the scene of drivers accelerating aggressively, revving engines and travelling at excessive speeds.

While there is no evidence to suggest organised street racing is a regular occurrence, residents have reported vehicles appearing to race one another, performing rapid acceleration and driving in a manner they believe is dangerous. Such behaviour can create significant risks for other motorists, pedestrians and nearby residents, particularly on a road with numerous junctions, crossings and side streets.

The concerns reflect a wider national problem. Police forces across the country have stepped up action against illegal street racing and antisocial driving, warning that the behaviour can have devastating consequences. The Government has also strengthened powers allowing police to seize and destroy vehicles used in antisocial driving offences in appropriate circumstances.

Road safety already forms one of the priorities for Greater Manchester Police's Milkstone and Deeplish neighbourhood team. Officers say they are carrying out high-visibility traffic operations, speed enforcement and action against inconsiderate motorists alongside wider work tackling antisocial behaviour and organised crime in the area.

Residents say the issue extends beyond noise. High-speed driving can intimidate pedestrians, discourage people from walking to local businesses and increase the risk of collisions. Milkstone Road is a busy mixed-use corridor where children, elderly residents and shoppers regularly cross the road throughout the day.

National road safety experts have consistently warned that excessive speed dramatically reduces the time available for drivers to react while increasing both the likelihood and severity of collisions. Even where no crash occurs, repeated antisocial driving can have a lasting impact on neighbourhoods through noise, fear and disruption.

Many local residents are now calling for additional measures, including increased police patrols during evening hours, more targeted traffic enforcement, mobile speed checks and continued action against drivers found to be driving dangerously or inconsiderately.

Greater Manchester Police encourages anyone witnessing dangerous driving to report it where it is safe to do so. Dashcam footage, CCTV and details such as registration numbers, locations and times can all assist officers in identifying offenders. Residents should always call 999 if they believe there is an immediate danger to life or serious risk to road users.

For most drivers, Milkstone Road is simply another journey home or to work. However, residents hope that continued enforcement and responsible driving will ensure the road remains safe for everyone who lives, works and travels through one of Rochdale's busiest neighbourhoods.
