Littleborough residents help boost flood resilience through Resilient Roch project

Residents at Olive Standring House in Littleborough have been enjoying the summer sunshine while playing a part in efforts to improve flood resilience in the borough.

Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, Rochdale Borough Council, the Environment Agency and contractors joined residents to refresh planters as part of the ongoing Resilient Roch project.

The programme is supporting homes affected by the devastating Boxing Day floods of 2015 as well as properties considered to remain at risk of flooding today.

The work at Olive Standring House provided an opportunity for residents to get involved in improvements to their surroundings while drawing attention to the wider measures being introduced to make homes and communities more resilient to future flooding.

Further improvements are being rolled out across the borough, including flood doors, sump pumps and flood barriers. These measures are intended to reduce the impact on individual properties when extreme rainfall and rising water levels threaten homes.

Littleborough and the wider Pennine area have first-hand experience of the disruption flooding can cause. The Boxing Day floods in 2015 affected communities across the borough and remain an important reference point for current flood-prevention and resilience work.

The Resilient Roch programme brings together housing providers, the council, the Environment Agency, contractors and residents, combining physical protection measures with work intended to help communities prepare for future flood events.

The planter work at Olive Standring House is a smaller but visible part of that wider programme, giving residents an opportunity to participate directly while improvements continue elsewhere across Rochdale borough.
