Councillor Daniel Meredith backs stronger Hornets partnership after Superhero Day

Balderstone and Kirkholt councillor Daniel Meredith has praised Rochdale Hornets' Superhero Day after spending the afternoon at the club's council-sponsored fixture with his family.

Meredith attended the Hornets men's match against Whitehaven, although the afternoon produced mixed fortunes for Rochdale's teams.

The men's side narrowly lost to Whitehaven, while the Hornets women recorded a victory against Leigh Miners. Meredith joked that he may have been the day's 'jinx', having watched the men's defeat but missed the women's win while his daughter Meadhbh was having her afternoon nap.

Despite the result, Meredith described it as a great afternoon and said the council-sponsored match provided an opportunity to discuss the relationship between Rochdale Hornets and Rochdale Borough Council.

He said it was 'brilliant' to be at the game and to speak about how the Hornets and the council can continue working together to strengthen both rugby and community spirit across Rochdale.

The comments underline the wider community role played by Rochdale Hornets beyond results on the pitch, with the club's men's and women's teams, family matchdays and community activity providing opportunities to bring residents together around the sport.

Superhero Day added a family-focused theme to the fixture, encouraging supporters of different ages to take part in the matchday experience.

Meredith is a Labour and Co-operative councillor representing Balderstone and Kirkholt and serves as Rochdale Borough Council's cabinet member for regeneration and housing.

The men's result may not have gone Rochdale's way, but Meredith's message after the afternoon was focused firmly on the future: building on cooperation between the council and Hornets to support rugby and community life across the borough.
