You can read everything on this site without giving us anything. This page explains the limited personal information we hold when you choose to interact with us, what we use it for, and the rights you have over it.
Reading the site
Reading Rochdale Daily requires no account, no sign-in and no personal information. We do not build profiles of readers, we do not track you across other websites, and we do not sell or rent personal information to anyone, in any circumstances.
What we use, and why
We only hold personal information you have chosen to give us. In each case we use it for the stated purpose and nothing else.

Your email address is never displayed on the site, never shown to other readers, and is not returned by any public part of this website. Commenters see your display name and nothing else.
Our lawful basis
Under UK data protection law we rely on:
- Consent — for any optional cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legitimate interests — for operating reader accounts and the comment section, keeping the site secure, and preventing abuse. We have considered your interests and rights and believe this use is proportionate and would not surprise you.
- Legal obligation — where the law requires us to hold or produce information, including our responsibilities as the operator of a website that carries comments from others.
Newsletter
If you sign up to the newsletter we store your email address, the time you consented, the wording you agreed to, and a salted hash of the network address used (not the address itself), so we can show that consent was given. We use it only to send the newsletter. We do not sell or share it. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email, or by writing to news@rochdaledaily.co.uk, and we will delete your address.
Sharing
We do not sell, rent or trade personal information. We share it only where we must:
- with the specialist providers who host this website and deliver our email, who act on our instructions and may not use the information for their own purposes;
- where we are required to by law, by a court order, or in response to a valid legal claim — for example where someone alleges a comment has defamed them and the law requires us to respond.
Where information is handled outside the UK, we make sure it is protected by the safeguards UK law requires.
How long we keep it
We keep information only as long as we need it. Account details are held while your account is open and for a limited period afterwards, so we can deal with any complaint or legal claim about what was posted. Correspondence is kept only as long as it is useful for the matter you raised.
Published comments remain on the article unless you delete your account, you ask us to remove them, or we remove them under our Terms.
Your rights
You have the right to ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected if it is wrong, to have it deleted, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to withdraw consent where you have given it. You will never be charged for exercising these rights, and we will not treat you differently for doing so.
To make a request, email news@rochdaledaily.co.uk. We respond within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We would rather you came to us first so we can put it right.
Cookies
We use a small number of strictly necessary cookies and similar storage to make the site work, keep it secure and remember choices you have made, such as staying signed in. These cannot be switched off without breaking the site.
Optional cookies — for measuring how the site is used, and to support advertising — stay off unless you turn them on. Nothing optional is set before you choose. You can change your mind at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer.
Journalism
Some of what we publish contains personal information about people in the news. UK data protection law provides a specific exemption for processing carried out for journalism, where publication is in the public interest and complying with the usual rules would be incompatible with journalism. We rely on that exemption in our reporting, and we apply it with care rather than as a blanket.
That exemption does not affect any of your rights as a reader, a commenter or a subscriber, which are set out above in full.
If you believe something we have published about you is inaccurate or unfair, our corrections and complaints process is the fastest route to putting it right, and it is open to anyone.
