Safety Improvements on Grimshaw Lane in Middleton Spark Local Objections

A scheme aimed at improving safety on Grimshaw Lane in Middleton has generated objections from local residents due to the proposed loss of parking spaces. The initiative comes in response to ongoing concerns about speeding drivers and a series of accidents on this busy road, which has a 30 mph speed limit.

The tragic death of 78-year-old Terence Lewis James, who was struck by a car on Grimshaw Lane on September 30, 2024, has intensified calls for safety enhancements. Local authorities have developed plans that include the installation of three pedestrian crossing islands, improvements to bus stops, and the introduction of double yellow lines to reduce obstructive parking and enhance crossing options for pedestrians.

Despite the intention to improve safety, a council report indicates that the plans will result in the loss of approximately 10 parking spaces. Some residents have expressed frustration over this aspect of the proposal. Ann Lewis, a long-time resident, voiced her concerns about losing her nearby parking space, stating that it would significantly impact her mobility and daily life. Meanwhile, others, like Michael Jackson, have highlighted the dangers posed by parked cars obstructing visibility at junctions, arguing that the changes are necessary to prevent further accidents.

The consultation process for the scheme revealed 13 objections, but not all feedback has been negative. Some residents support the safety measures, emphasising the need for action to prevent future tragedies. The council is expected to review the feedback and proceed with the implementation of the safety improvements, which aim to create a safer environment for all road users.
