Transport for Greater Manchester Confirms Tram Extension to Heywood is Still Under Consideration

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has confirmed that plans for a new Metrolink line connecting Heywood, Bury, and Rochdale are still under consideration. This development follows a period of uncertainty regarding the project's status, particularly after Andy Burnham transitioned to Prime Minister and his successor, Bev Craig, did not mention the project in her recent discussions.

The proposed tram extension is part of the Oldham-Rochdale-Heywood-Bury Tram-Train pathfinder initiative. If approved, it would create Greater Manchester's first 'orbital' Metrolink route, which would not pass through the city centre, and introduce the first 'tram-train' service in the region.
