Rochdale Opens Fourth Children's Home 'Diamond' to Support Local Young People

Rochdale Borough Council has officially opened its fourth children's home, named 'Diamond', as part of a £3.4 million investment aimed at expanding residential care for children in the borough. This new facility will support three children with complex needs and disabilities who come into care, providing them with a homely environment equipped with features such as a dedicated sensory room.

The opening of Diamond marks the completion of a quartet of new homes, which also includes 'Emerald', 'Sapphire', and 'Ruby'. These names were chosen following suggestions from children in care, reflecting their input in the development of these facilities. In total, the new homes will provide 12 placements for children, helping to address the ongoing challenge faced by local councils in securing suitable placements for vulnerable children.

Councillor Rachel Massey, cabinet member for children's services and education, expressed her delight at the opening of Diamond, stating that its welcoming atmosphere will significantly benefit the lives of children and young people in need of support. The council's investment aims to ensure that more children can remain within their local community rather than being placed far from home.

The establishment of Diamond and its sister homes is part of a broader strategy to enhance the quality of care available to children in Rochdale, particularly during a time when many local authorities are struggling to find appropriate placements. This initiative is expected to provide a more stable and comforting environment for children in care, allowing them to thrive in a familiar setting.
