The Heywood Community Gala, held from 18 to 20 September at The Pig and Whistle, has faced criticism after images from the event depicted a significantly smaller setup than what was promised in promotional materials. Advertised as featuring large fairground rides, live music, and various attractions, photographs taken on Saturday morning showed only a handful of gazebos outside the venue.

The promotional artwork, generated by AI, showcased vibrant fairground rides and a bustling atmosphere, leading to comparisons with Glasgow's infamous Willy Wonka experience, which faced backlash for similar discrepancies in 2024. Critics on social media, particularly on a Facebook page named Cameron Boland - Scam Event Watch & Awareness, have alleged that the event was misrepresented and warned traders against paying upfront for stalls.

The Facebook page claimed that significant costs for the gala included security and staging, but alleged that no stage was present and performers were instead situated on a rug between tables. These claims have not been independently verified, but the page has a history of highlighting issues with similar events. Notably, a previous event organised by the same individual was cancelled by Salford City Council and Greater Manchester Police due to concerns.

Despite the criticisms, Kelly, the tenant and operator of The Pig and Whistle, defended the event, stating that activities were indeed taking place as planned. However, the photographs have raised questions about the overall experience offered at the gala, leaving attendees and potential visitors uncertain about the event's value.
