Residents furious as waste returns to Heywood alley weeks after major council clean-up

Residents in Heywood have expressed anger after rubbish was allegedly dumped again in an alleyway just weeks after council crews carried out a major clearance operation.

The alleyway connecting Marlborough Street and Canal Street had previously become heavily cluttered with waste, including discarded food, chairs, refrigerators and freezers. Residents said the accumulation was attracting significant numbers of vermin.

A few weeks ago, two large council vehicles were deployed to clear the alley and remove the accumulated rubbish.

Residents now say household bins have once again been emptied into the alleyway, raising fears that the vermin problem will return.

The repeated dumping is particularly frustrating for families during the summer months. People living nearby say children are being prevented from comfortably using their own backyards because of the rubbish and associated vermin.

One resident described the behaviour as 'extremely selfish, lazy and utterly disgusting' and said photographic evidence and CCTV footage would be submitted to Rochdale Borough Council and Greater Manchester Police.

Residents hope any available footage will help establish who is responsible and allow the relevant authorities to consider enforcement action. Fly-tipping and repeated waste dumping can create environmental and public-health problems beyond the appearance of an area, particularly where food waste provides a readily available source for rats and other vermin.
